Worshippers believe the Shroud of Turin to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ 성의숭배자들은 토리노의 성의가 죽은 예수의 몸을 감쌌던 천이라 믿고 있다

The Shroud of Turin returns to public display at the city's cathedral on Sunday after a break of five years. 토리노의 성의가 5년간의 공백을 깨고 市주교좌성당에서 다시 전시되고 있다.

The 4.4-metre-long (14-ft) cloth will be on show until 24 June. 4.4미터 길이의 성의는 6월24일까지 전시될 것이다.

Viewings are free but must be booked. Already one million people have signed up. 참관은 무료이지만 예약해야 한다. 지금까지 이미 1백만명이 서명을 완료했다.

Some devotees believe the shroud to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Sceptics point to carbon dating that suggests it is a medieval forgery from the 1300s. 일부 신심가들은 이 성의가 예수 그리스도가 돌아가셨을 대 몸에 두른 것이라 믿고 있다. 그러나 회의론자들은 방사성 탄소 이용 연대측정법에 의하면 1300년대의 중세기 위조품이라고 주장한다.

Scientists have not agreed on how the image of a man was imprinted on the cloth. 과학자들은 어떻게 사람의 모습이 이 옷에 새겨졌는지 의견일치를 보이지 않고 있다.

Turin Shroud: In detail

Pope Francis will be among those to view the shroud - in a visit on 21 June. The last public viewings were in 2010, when 2.5 million people came to see it. 교황 프란시스는 6월21일 방문하여 이 성의를 관람하게 될 것이다. 마지막 전시는 2010년에 있었고, 이 당시 250만명이 와서 보았다.

The Church has not officially claimed that Christ's body was wrapped in the shroud, preferring instead to focus on what it means to those who see it. 교회는 이 성의가가 예수의 몸을 감쌌던 것이라고 아직 공식적으로 밝힌바 없다.

Archbishop of Turin Cesare Nosiglia said: "What counts the most is that this shroud... reflects in a clear and precise manner how the gospels describe the passion and death of Jesus. 토리노 대주교 세사레 노시글리아는 "가장 문제가 되는 것은 복음서들이 예수의 수난과 죽음을 어떻게 묘사하고 있는가를 분명한 방식으로 이 성의가 보여주고 있다는 점이다."고 말했다.

Archbishop Nosiglia said that many of those coming to see the shroud would be returnees.

"That means there is a fundamental need in people's hearts to renew this incredible experience that they had the first time they saw it," he said.

"Even non-believers will come. It's an occasion that brings everybody together."

The shroud will be displayed in a climate-controlled case for 12 hours a day in Turin's Cathedral of St John the Baptist.
