Hong Kong outrage over Chinese subtitle switch 홍콩 시민들 중국어 자막변경에 분노하다

Hong Kong officials received more than 10,000 complaints in three days after a popular TV programme began subtitling output in the Chinese characters associated with mainland China. (subtitle: 명사로 자막, 동사로 자막을 달다, 자막처리 하다.) (output: 출력)

Hong Kong uses traditional Chinese script as opposed to the mainland's simplified characters. 홍콩이 번자체를 쓰는 이유는 중국대륙을 싫어하기 때문. 

The broadcaster, TVB, defended the move, saying Hong Kong is an international city. (broadcaster: 방송인, 방송사, 방송국)

The city has seen tensions over the perceived growing influence of Beijing. 북경당국의 홍콩에 대한 날이 갈 수록 정치적 영향력이 커지는 현실에 대한 우려 섞인 인식에서 비롯된 긴장이 홍콩에서 느껴진다. 

The communications regulator said the complaints pertained to TVB's daily 40-minute Mandarin-language evening news programme. (communications regulator: 통신 단속/감독기관) (pertain to sb/sth: ~와 관련되다)

"This new arrangement will offer our viewers more choice and better serve different audience needs," a spokesman said in a statement.

A commentary on the matter by the Chinese Communist Party's mouthpiece People's Daily called on Hong Kong to "not be so overly sensitive towards simplified script". (mouthpiece: 대변자, 여기선 기관지. There is perhaps no issue more integral to the identity of Hong Kong people than their use of the Chinese language: spoken Cantonese with traditional written characters.

That's why a move to change the written script used in a prime-time news bulletin, even if it is a Mandarin-language programme, has caused so much anger. (prime-time: 골든아워, 중요시간대)

Pro-democracy lawmaker Claudia Mo has written a protest letter to TVB. She admits the broadcaster hasn't violated any rules. 방송사는 어떤 규정도 위반하지는 않았다.

But she says the move is part of an obvious plan to turn Hong Kong into a mainland Chinese city. 번자체에서 간자체로의 임의적 전환은 홍콩을 중국대륙의 일개 도시로 변입시키려는 계획의 일부이다.

"If you want to kill a city, the first thing you do is to kill the language," she tells me. 일개 도시를 파괴하고자 하면, 첫째로 할일은 그 도시의 언어를 파괴하는 것이다.

She and other political activists believe if they do not protest the decision now, other television programmes may be next. 이번 결정에 저항하지 않는다면, 다른 방송 프로그램도 간자체로 전환될 것이다.

The move comes amid growing tensions in the city, which saw widespread pro-democracy protests in 2014, over growing social and political influence from mainland China.

Earlier this month violence erupted in the city's working-class neighbourhood of Mong Kok when authorities tried to clear illegal food hawkers, who are seen as an integral part of local culture. (hawker: 행상)
