The Bombing Of Korean Flight 858

In November 1987 a South Korean airliner was blown out of the sky, killing 115 people on board. The attack on Korean Air flight 858 is believed to have been the work of agents of the North Korean regime, seeking to disrupt the Summer Olympics in Seoul. Pete Ross has been hearing from relatives of some of those who died that day, as well as from one of the bombers, the North Korean agent Kim Hyun-hui.

The Bombing of Korean Flight 858

Today I am taking you back to 1987 an attack on South Korean Airliner which left 115 people dead. It’s believed to be a bomb attack ordered by the North Korean leadership in an attempt to disrupt upcoming Olympic Games in Seoul. I’ve been speaking to relatives of those who died.

Good evening, Korean Airline’s official said they fear one of the airliners was crushed somewhere over in south-east Asia with 115 people on board.

It was the 29th of November 1987 just before South Korea was due to host Olympics. The Korean air flight 858 disappeared on its way back from Baghdad to Seoul in South Korea. Im Ok-soon was getting ready to meet her husband Kim Duck-bong at the airport in Seoul.

“In 1987, on November 29, Sunday morning, the company called to tell us that KAL 858 will be arriving at 8:30pm. After preparing the dinner, my little daughters and I went to greet him at Kimpo Airport.”

But shortly after getting the airport, Ok-soon realized something was wrong.

"My husband manager brought us to an officer at the airport. We went with him without having any idea of what’s going on. And they were ready panic stroke in office. We heard news KAL 858 has gone missing. My mind went blank. I see things unable to think."

Im Ok-soon was beside herself.

“At first, they said the plane crushed in rainforest between Myanmar and Thailand. As spent some time investigating and then they said the plane went down into the ocean.”

In the early hours of investigation Kerry Ao’s??? explanations of KAL 858’s disappearance began to circulate.

The only clue of whatever happened to KAL flight 858 happened so quickly that the pilots didn’t have time to send emergency mayday message. All the codes signals which have alerted air traffic controllers. That points to one or three things, that is, mid-air collisions and explosion or structural failure.

Ja-ok Jung is the wife of one of the pilots on board.

At the time of accidents the victims’ families were losing their minds, which say:

“That impeccable security of yours, how could it happen like this accident? We were very suspicious.”

Meanwhile relatives of victims gathered in the airport waiting for news.

The painful conclusion for crowds waiting anxiously at Seoul airport was their relatives and their friends of probably victims of the terrorist attack.

Several days passed. And authorities were still figuring it out what happened to the missing plane.

A collision seems unlikely. No other aircraft was being reported missing. None was known to be in the same area at the same time. An explosion is possible. The Korean authorities in Seoul have linked the crash to possible terrorist bomb aimed at racking next year’s Olympic Games.

South Korean suspicions immediately turned to communist North Korea, the country’s ideological enemy ever since Korean civil war that had divided the Korean peninsula in the 1950s. But if not North Korea itself, perhaps supporters in the south.

Anti-government demonstrators opposed to the Olympic Games next year of recent disruption of South Korean capital Seoul, their venue, the eventual destination of last Sunday’s flight. The belief that now is the terrorist also opposed to the Games main blown up???.

It was the case that the plain had been attacked by the North Korean agent.

“I was told by senior officer that before the Seoul Olympics we will take down South Korean airliner. He said we will create chaos and confusion in South Korea. The measure which strike us to severe blow for the revolution.”

That’s Kim Hyun-hee who spoke to BBC in 2013. At the age of 19 she was recruited as an agent for the North Korean regime. She spent years training for her mission much of that time learning how to speak and act like a Japanese woman. on November 27 1987, on what she said was Pyong-yang’s direct orders. She and her male complice both disguised as Japanese tourist placed bomb on South Korean airliner flight 858.

It took off at Bagdad and landed first at Abu Dhabi, where two passengers, 69 year old man and 27 year old woman got off. Meanwhile the plane they left continued this towards the road??? until it crashed in fine weather and in another way of routine flight on the Thai and Burmese border.

We now know that flight 858 didn’t crash but was blown up and everyone on board was killed. But the Korean agent who planted the bomb didn’t get away. Soon they track down in court. The authority still thought they were Japanese.

A Japanese couple who were suspected of terrorist link with crash of South Korean airliner on Sunday have swallowed poison. The two were detained in Bahrain and were about to be questioned when they took the poison from the cigarette package. The man died and his companion is seriously ill. They have been passengers on the airliner getting off the stop before the crash.

As soon as Kim Hyun-hee was well enough, she was flown to Seoul for interrogation and displayed in front of international media.

In a place of publicity, this morning the South Koreans paraded the woman and they claimed her Korean agent. Kim Hyun hee apparently told in the intelligence officers she would have blown up the South Korean airliner to disrupt the Olympic Games.

At first, Kim Hyun hee tried to keep up pretending she was Japanese. But after days of interrogation finally she broke.

“When I confessed I was so reluctant that I thought my family in North Korea would be in danger. It was a big decision to confess. But I began to realize it will be the right things to do for the victims for them to be able to understand the truth.”

Communist North Korea however said allegedly incident was intrinsic part of plot by South Korea to moment to smear campaign against it. And some of the relatives of those died today still think that could be true including Im Ok-soon.

“This case is bad words. They didn’t even think of looking for body of plane. As soon as say announce that plane missing, the media started making presumptuous reports blaming the North Korea for the accidents. And all of the efforts by the government were putting into research the terrorists.

Ja-ok Jung whose husband was flying the plane also said she still hasn’t come to terms with what happened.

“I never want thought it was possible that an accident like this could happen. And then it happened. To this day it wasn’t real to me. It feels like he is still here. My heart still aches, because I can’t forget it. Little things that he did on ordinary day still pop up in my head. I wish I could stop thinking about these things. It’s just too painful.”

In 1989 South Korean court sentenced North Korean agent Kim Hyun hee to death. But she was later pardoned. She since married a South Korean officer with whom she has two children. Some might say she got off lightly considering what she did. But she says she still carries off a heavy burden of guilt. I was brainwashed by the North Korean communist regime.

“There is no other country like North Korea. People outside can’t understand the whole country set up to show loyalty to the Kim royal family. It’s like religion. People are so indoctrinated. There are no human rights, no freedoms. When I look back, it makes me sad. Why did I have to be born in North Korea? Look at what it did to me.”

She now lives in secret location in South Korea surrounded by guards, fearing of being assassinated by the North. Many of the relatives of those who died on the plane are still waiting for justice. That’s it for this version of witness with me, Pete Ross.
