Pope Leo XIV's first address from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica

 

Peace be with you all!

 

Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greetings of the Risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for the flock of God. I too would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families, to all peoples, to the whole earth. Peace be with you!

 

This is the peace of the Risen Christ, a disarmed peace and a disarming, humble and perwevering peace. It comes from God, God who loves us all unconditionally. We still keep in our ears that weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis blessing Rome.

 

The Pople who blessed Rome gave his blessing to the world, to the entire world, that morning of Easter Day. Allow me to follow up on that same blessing: God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not previail! We are all in God's hands. Therefore, without fear, united hand in hand with God and among ourselves, let us move forward. We are disciples of Christ. Christ precedes us. The world needs his light. Humanity needs him as the bridge to be reached by God and his love. Help us too, and then each other to build bridgesm, with dialogue, with encounter, uniting us all to be one people always in peace. Thank you Pople Francis!

 

I also want to thank all my brother cardinals who have chosen me to be the Successor of Peter and to walk together with you, as a united Church always seeking peace, justice, always trying to work as men and women faithful to Jesus Christ, without fear, to proclaim the Gospel, to be missionaries.

 

I am a son of Saint Augustine, an Augustinian, who said: "with you I am a Christian and for you a bishop." In this sense we can all walk together toward that homland that God has prepared for us. 

 

To the church of Rome, a special greeting. We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Chruch that builds bridges, dialogue, always open to receiving, like this square, with open arms. All, all those who need our charity, our presence, dialogue and love.

 

And if you will allow em a word, greetings to everyone and especially to my dear diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru, where a faithful people accompanied their bishop, shared their faith and gave so much, so much to continue to be a faithful Church of Jesus Christ.

 

To all of you, brothers and sisters of Rome, of Italy, of the whole world, we want to be a synodal Church, a Church that walks, a Church that always seeks peace, that always seeks charity, that always trieds to be close especially to those who suffer.

 

Today is the day of the Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii. Our Mother Mary always wants to walk with us, be close, help us with her intercession and her love.

 

So I would like to pray with you. Let us pray together for this new mission, for the whole Church, for peace in the world and let us ask this special grace to Mary, our Mother.

평화가 여러분 모두와 함께!!

La pace sia con tutti voi!!

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 이것은 하느님의 양떼를 위해 생명을 바치신 착한 목자이시고 부활하신 그리스도의 첫 인사입니다. 저 또한 이 평화의 인사가 여러분의 마음에 닿기를, 여러분의 가정에 이르기를, 모든 사람들에게, 어디에 있든 모든 민족과 온 세상에 닿기를 바랍니다. 평화가 여러분과 함께!

이것은 부활하신 그리스도의 평화입니다. 무장한 것이 아닌, 무장을 무너뜨리는 평화이며, 겸손하고 인내심 있는 평화입니다. 이 평화는 우리 모두를 무조건적으로 사랑하시는 하느님께로부터 옵니다.

우리는 아직도 우리의 귀에 남아 있는 그 나직하지만 용감한 로마를 축복해 오셨던 프란치스코 교황님의 목소리를 기억합니다. 로마를 축복하시던 교황님은 사실 온 세상을 축복하고 계셨던 것입니다. 바로 그 부활절 아침에 말입니다. 저도 그 동일한 축복을 이어가고자 합니다. 하느님은 우리를 사랑하십니다. 하느님은 여러분 모두를 사랑하십니다. 그리고 악은 이 사랑을 이기지 못할 것입니다. 우리는 모두 하느님의 손 안에 있습니다. 그러니 두려움 없이 하느님과 손을 맞잡고 또한 서로의 손을 맞잡고 함께 앞으로 나아갑시다. 우리는 예수 그리스도의 제자입니다. 스승이신 그리스도께서는 우리보다 앞서 가십니다. 세상은 그분의 빛을 필요로 합니다. 인류는 하느님의 사랑에 이르기 위한 자리로서 그분을 필요로 합니다. 여러분도 우리를 도와주시고, 또 서로를 도우며, 대화를 통해, 그리고 만남을 통해, 우리가 모두 하나의 평화로운 백성이 되기를 위해 다리를 놓읍시다. 프란치스코 교황님께 감사드립니다!

또한 저를 베드로의 후계자로 선택해 주시고 여러분과 함께 걸어가기를 원하신 모든 추기경 형제들에게 감사드립니다. 우리는 하나된 교회로서 언제나 평화와 정의를 추구하며, 예수 그리스도께 충실한 신앙인으로서 복음을 선포하는 선교사가 되기 위해 두려움 없이 일하고자 합니다.

저는 성 아우구스티노의 아들, 즉 아우구스티노 수도회 소속입니다. 성인은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. "여러분과 함께 나는 그리스도인이며 여러분을 위해서는 주교입니다." 이런 의미에서 우리는 모두 함께 하느님께서 우리를 위해 마련하신 본향 곧 하느님 나라를 위해 걸어갈 수 있습니다.

로마 교회에 특별한 인사를 전합니다. 우리는 함께 어떻게 선교하는 교회가 될 수 있을지 찾아야 합니다 다리를 놓고 대화를 하고 언제나 열린 자세로 모든 이들을 맞이하는 교회 말입니다. 마치 이 광장이 두 팔을 벌리고 있는 것처럼 말이지요. 우리 차서 우리 자신을, 우리 존재를, 대화와 사랑을 필요로 하는 모든 이들을 향해 말입니다.

그리고 허락해 주신다면, 한마디만, 제 사랑하는 페루의 치클라요 교구에 인사를 전하고 싶습니다. 신실한 백성이 주교와 함께 걸어가며 신앙을 나누고, 예수 그리스도께 충실한 교회로 남기 위해 많은 것을 나누어 준 곳입니다.

로마의, 이탈리아의, 그리고 전 세계의 모든 형제자매 여러분!

우리는 함께 걸어가는 시노드적 교회, 평화를 추구하는 교회, 사랑을 추구하는 교회, 특별히 고통받는 이들에게 가까이 다가가는 교회가 되기를 바랍니다.

오늘은 폼페이의 성모님께 전구를 청하는 기도의 날입니다. 우리 어머님 마리아께서는 언제나 우리와 함께 걸으시고, 우리 가까이에 계시며, 당신의 전구와 사랑으로 우리를 도우시기를 원하십니다. 그러니 여러분과 함께 기도하고 싶습니다. 이 새로운 사명을 위해, 온 교회를 위해, 세계의 평화를 위해 함께 기도합시다. 그리고 이 특별한 은총을 우리의 어머니 마리아께 청합시다.
