Top independent school puts lessons free on iTunes 영국 어느 일류학교 아이튠스 수업자료 무료 공개

A leading independent school is making dozens of its courses available free online, so lessons can be downloaded by pupils or teachers at other schools. 한 일류 독립학교가 수업자료들을 온라인에 무료로 올림으로써, 이 자료들은 타학교 학생들이나 교사들도 자신들의 학교에서 다운로드 받아 이용할 수 있다.

The ground-breaking initiative by Stephen Perse Foundation school in Cambridge will make A-level, IB and GCSE courses available online. 영국 캠브리지에 소재한 스티븐 펠스 학교재단에 의한 획기적인 시도는 A레벨(영국 대입 준비생들이 보통 18세 때 치르는 과목별 상급 시험))과 국제공통대학입학자격시험(IB)(international baccalaureate)과 중등 교육 자격 검정 시험[GCSE 시험] (General Certificate of Secondary Education: 잉글랜드・웨일스 및 일부 다른 국가들에서 보통 16세 된 학생들이 치는 시험) 과정들을 온라인에서 이용할 수 있게 해준다.

They can be downloaded free through Apple's iTunes U service. 학습과정들은 애플의 아이 튠스 U서비스를 통해 공짜로 다운로드 받을 수 있다.

Principal Tricia Kelleher says: "The digital world requires teachers, like everyone else, to work differently." 이 학교의 교장 트리시아 켈레허는 "디지털 세계는 모든 사람들과 마찬가지로 기존과 다른 방식으로 일할 것을 요구하고 있지요."라고 말한다.

The Stephen Perse Foundation, one of the country's highest achieving schools, has been experimenting with digital learning, with every pupil having their own iPad. 스티븐 펄스 학교재단은 영국의 일류학교중 하나로, 아이패드를 갖고 있는 모든 사람과 함께 디지털 학습을 시험하고 있다.

The school has been building digital support materials for each subject, including video, audio, written materials and links to online resources. 이 학교는 각 과목당 비디오, 오디어, 출판물, 온라인 자료를 포함한 디지털 보충재료들을 구축하고 있다.

These digital text-books, produced by teachers for their specific lessons, form a library of materials for pupils to follow in class and for revision. 교사들이 자신들의 수업을 위해 만들었던 이러한 디지털 교재들은 수업에 참여하는 학생들과 수정을 위해 학습자료 도서관이 된다.

In what will be one of the biggest such projects in the UK, there will be 87 course units on iTunes U, which is the non-charging academic version of iTunes. They include both exam subjects and lessons for pupils aged 11 to 14. 영국에서 이는 가장 엄청난 프로젝트 중에 하나가 될 것이고, ITunes U에는 87개 과정이 담길 예정이며, 이 과정은 아이튠스의 무료학습판이다. 여기에는 11세부터 14세 연령의 학생들에게 해당되는 시험과목들과 학습내용이 담겨있다.

The iTunes U service has been associated with higher education, with many leading universities around the world making thousands of courses available. 아이튠스유서비스는 이용가능한 전세계 일류대학교들의 수 천가지 학습과정과 더불어 고등교육과 연관되어 있다. 

There have been more than one billion downloads, with the current chart-topping collection being Philosophy for Beginners from Oxford University. 현재 다운로드 1순위를 기록하고 있는 옥스포드 대학교의 초급 철학 과정을 포함해,  다운로드 수가 10억 이상을 기록하고 있다.

But the Stephen Perse Foundation has used iTunes U to offer a set of courses specifically for school-level subjects. 그러나 스테븐 펠스 재단은 아이튠스유를 이용하여 중등과정과목을 위한 일련의 과정들을 제공하고 있다.

'Amazing step' '놀라운 첫 단추'

Simon Armitage, a senior teacher at the school who has used the digital resources with geography classes, said: "I think we are just at the beginning of the transformation of the way in which we teach in schools. 지리수업에서 디지털 자료들을 사용하고 있는 이 학교의 고참 교사, 시몬 아미티지는 "학교에서 가르치는 방식이 변화되고 있는 초기에 있다고 생각해요."라고 말했다.

Ms Kelleher, the school's principal, said that the focus "shouldn't be on the technology, it should always be on the learning". 이 학교 교장 켈레첼 여사는 "중요한 건 기술이 아니라 학습에 언제나 촛점을 맞춰야 한다"는 것이라 말했다.

The "novelty value" stage of using technology in schools soon wears off, she says. But students and teachers are seeing the practical advantages of online, digital materials. 학교에서 테크놀로지를 이용하여 수업하는 것이  "참신함이란 가치"란 단계는 곧 사라질 것이라고 그녀는 말한다. 그러나 학생들과 교사들은 온라인의 이점과 디지털 학습자료를 만나고 있다.

The idea of using shared, customised digital materials on the iTunes U platform has been taken a step further in Texas in the United States. 아이튠스유 플랫폼에서 공유된 맞춤형 디지털 학습자료들의 이용은 미국 텍사스에서 첫 발을 띄었다. 

There are 14 school districts in the US state which collectively produce and share online course materials, which are designed to support the local curriculum and testing system. 미국내 14개 학군의 학교에서 집단적으로 온라인 학습자료들을 생산하고 공유하고 있다. 이 자료들은 본래 지역의 교과목과 시험제도를 보완하기 위해 개발되었다.

There are 58 teachers working on content development for the online service, focusing on maths, science, social studies and English. 58명의 교사들이 수학, 과학, 사회, 영어 과목에 대한 온라인 서비스를 염두에 두고 콘텐트 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다.
