Nepal earthquake: Rescue effort intensifies 네팔지진: 구조노력 강화

Rescue efforts in Nepal are intensifying after more than 1,800 people were killed in the country's worst earthquake in more than 80 years. 지난 80년 이래 가장 센 지진으로 현재까지 1,800명 이상이 사망하자, 네팔에서의 구조노력이 더욱 강화되고 있다.

Many countries and international charities have offered aid to Nepal to deal with the disaster. 많은 국가들과 국제 자선단체들이 재난과 싸우고 있는 네팔에 구호품을 보내고 있다.

Seventeen people have been killed on Mount Everest by avalanches - the mountain's worst-ever disaster. 에베레스트 산에서도 17명이 눈사태로 사망했다.

Officials fear that the death toll could rise as the desperate search for survivors continues. 생존자를 찾고자 하는 필사적인 노력이 계속 진행되고 있음에도 사망자수가 늘 것이라고 관리들은 두려워하고 있다.

Scores of bodies have been ferried to hospitals in Kathmandu, many of which are struggling to cope with the number of injured. 다수의 시신들이 카투만두에 있는 병원들로 이송되었다. 이 병원들은 현재 많은 부상자들을 처치하느라 부산을 떨고 있다.

Rescuers in places used their bare hands to dig for survivors still buried underneath piles of rubble and debris overnight on Saturday. 배치된 구호봉사자들은 지난 토요일 밤새도록 돌무더기와 잔해 더미 아래 매몰된 생존자들을 찾기 위해 맨 손으로 구덩이를 팠다.

Army officer Santosh Nepal told the Reuters news agency that he and his soldiers had to dig a passage into a collapsed three-storey residential building in Kathmandu using pickaxes because bulldozers could not get through the ancient city's narrow streets. 네팔군 장교 산토쉬는 자신과 병사들이 불도저가 옛 도시의 좁은 길로 들어설 수 없었기 때문에,  카투만두에 있는 무너진 3층 아파트까지 이르는 길을 곡괭이로 뚤어야 했다고 로이터에 전했다.

The 7.8 magnitude quake struck an area of central Nepal between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara on Saturday morning. 진도 7.8의 지진이 지난 토요일 오전 수도 카투만두와 포카라 시 중간에 위치한 네팔 중부지역에서 발생했다.

Helicopters began landing at Mount Everest base camp on Sunday to rescue avalanche victims. 헬기들이 눈사태 피해자들을 구조하기 위해 일요일 에베레스트山의 베이스캠프에 착륙하기 시작했다.

The latest home ministry figures say 1,805 people were killed and 4,718 people were injured. 최근 가정부 수치로는 1,805명이 사망했고 4,718명이 부상 당했다.

There were also victims in India, Bangladesh and in the Chinese region of Tibet. 이 밖에도 인도와 방글라데시 그리고 중국의 티벳지역에서도 희생자들이 발생했다.

Little information has emerged from the epicentre, where extensive damage has been reported, and there are fears the death toll could rise yet further. 피해가 엄청났던 진원지에 대한 소식은 별로 나온 게 없으며, 사망자수가 더 늘어날 거란 두려움이 남아있다.

It is the worst earthquake to strike Nepal since one in 1934 which killed some 8,500 people. 지잔 1934년 8,500명이 사망한 지진이래, 이번 네팔의 지진은 최악이다.

"We have launched a massive rescue and rehabilitation action plan and lots needs to be done," Information and Broadcasting Minister Minendra Rijal told Indian television. "우리는 대량의 구호와 재활 행동 계획을 수립했으며 많은 것이 필요하다."고 정보방송부 장관 미렌드라 리잘은 인도 티브 방송에 얘기했다.

Hospitals across the country are struggling to cope with the high number of dead and injured 네팔 전역의 병원들이 많은 수의 사망자와 부상자들을 다루느라 고전하고 있다.

Scores of people slept outside on Saturday night - braving wet and cold weather - either because their homes were destroyed or because they in fear of numerous aftershocks. 많은 사람들이 토요일밤 축축하고 싸늘한 날씨를 무릅쓰고 밖에서 잠을 잤다. 왜냐하면 그들의 집이 파괴되었거나 아니면 혹시 있을지 모르는 여진이 두려웠기 때문이다.
