Declassified US records reveal the nation's intelligence chiefs used hundreds of Nazis as spies and informants after World War Two. 비밀이 해제된 미문서에 따르면, 미정보 책임자들은 수백명의 나치들을 제2차 세계대전 이후 첩자와 정보원으로 이용했었다.

Central Intelligence Agency officials are said to have turned to the country's former enemies to help beat the Soviet Union during the Cold War. CIA 책임자들은 냉전시대 소련을 이기기 위해 이전의 적국이었던 나라들에 의존했었다고 전해진다.

Academics studying the documents say America used at least 1,000 ex-Nazis. 이들 문서에 대한 전문적 검토에 따르면, 미국은 최소한 1천명의 前나치인들을 이용해 먹었다.

Some had served at the highest levels of the Nazi Party, and were recruited to work as spies for the US in Europe. 이 나치들 가운데 일부 인사는 나치黨에서 고위직을 지냈던 사람들이라, 유럽에서 미국을 위해 스파이로서 모집되었다.

Former SS officer Otto von Bolschwing reportedly wrote policy papers on how to terrorise Jews, but was hired by the CIA to spy in Europe after World War Two. 전직 나치 장교 오토 본 볼쉬빙은 알려진 바에 의하면 유태인들에게 공포를 느끼게 하는 법에 대한 정책서를 썼던 인물로, 제2차 세계대전 이후 CIA에 고용돼 유럽에서 첩자로 활동했었다. 

The agency is said to have relocated him and his family to New York in the 1950s as a reward for loyal service. CIA는 그의 충성스런 활동에 대한 보답으로 그와 그의 가족들을 1950년대 뉴욕으로 이주시켰다고 전해진다. 

Nazi collaborator Aleksandras Lileikis - linked to the massacres of tens of thousands of Jews in Lithuania - was recruited by the US as a spy in East Germany and later brought over to Boston. 리투아니아에서 수 만 명의 유대인들을 학살한 것과 관련된 나치 협조자 알렉산드라스 리레이키스는 미국에 의해 모집돼 동독에서 첩자로 활동하다 나중에 보스톤으로 이주시켜주었다.

There's evidence the CIA even tried to intervene when Mr Lileikis became the subject of a war crimes investigation. 리레이키스가 나치 전범 조사의 대상이 되었을 때 CIA가 심지어 개입했다는 증거도 있다.

The recruitment of Nazi assets occurred against the backdrop of Cold War paranoia and panic. 나치 전범들의 모집은 냉전의 편집증과 공황 (상태)를 배경으로 이뤄졌다.

But records indicate long-time FBI director J Edgar Hoover not only approved of the use of ex-Nazis as spies, he also dismissed the horrific acts they'd been involved in during the war as Soviet propaganda. 그러나 기록물에 의하면 장기간 FBI 책임자 에드가 후버는 전직 나치 전범들을 첩자로 이용하는 안을 승인했을 뿐 아니라, 소련의 선전처럼 전쟁 동안 이들이 참여했던 끔찍한 행동들을 묵살하기도 했다.

The revelations come one week after an Associated Press investigation found the US government had paid dozens of suspected Nazi war criminals millions of dollars in Social Security benefits after forcing them to leave the US. 이런 폭로들은 AP 통신사가 그 동안 미국정부가 수십 명의 나치 전범자들을 미국에서 추방시킨 후 수백만 달러의 사회보장 기금을 써왔다는 사실을 발견한 뒤 일주일 만에 나왔다. 

The payments were made through a legal loophole. The US justice department later said benefits are paid to individuals who renounce US citizenship and leave voluntarily. 지불은 법률상의 구멍을 통해서(법망을 피해서) 이뤄졌다. 미국법무부는 미국 시민권을 포기하고 자발적으로 출국하는 개인들에게 돈이 주어졌다고 말한다.
