Fernando Cardenal, a Nicaraguan priest who defied Vatican orders to leave the revolutionary Sandinista government in the 1980s, has died aged 82. 1980년대 산디니스타 혁명정부를 떠나라는 바티칸의 명령을 거부했던 니카라과 페르난도 카르데날 신부가 82세로 작고했다.

Father Cardenal was one of several Nicaraguan Catholic priests sanctioned for their involvement with Daniel Ortega's administration. 카르데날 신부는 다니엘 오르케가 행정부(=산디니스타 혁명정부)에 협력했다는 이유로 교황청에서 제재를 받았던 가톨릭 여러 신부들 가운데 한 사람이다.

He was suspended from the priesthood after refusing to stand down from his post as education minister. 그는 (교황청의 명령에 따라) 교육부 장관직에서 물러나지 않았기 때문에 사제직 정지 처분을 받았다.

Cardenal said he would be "committing a grave sin" to leave his position in the Sandinista government. 그는 산디니스타 정부가 준 자신의 직분(=교육부장관)을 버리는 것이야말로 "대죄를 범하는 것"이라 말하기 까지 했다.

He was one of many priests in the impoverished Central American nation who supported the Sandinista rebels' fight against the authoritarian government of Anastasio Somoza in the 1970s. 그는 1970년대 권위적인 아나스타시오 소모자 정부에 대항해 싸운 산디니스타 반군들을 지지했던 가난한 중남미 국가의 많은 사제들 중 한 사람이었다.
