바락 오바마 왈, ‘마리화나가 알코올보다 건강에 나쁜 건 아니다’

President Obama said he views smoking pot "as a bad habit and a vice" 오바마 대통령은 마리화나를 피우는 건 나쁜 습관이자 안 좋은 행동이란 견해를 밝혔다.

 

US President Barack Obama has said smoking marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol, but still called it a "bad idea". 미국 대통령 바락 오바마는 마리화나를 피우는 건 알코올보다 더 건강에 나쁜 건 아니라며 단지 “안 좋은 거”라고 했다.

Speaking to The New Yorker magazine, he said it was wrong to think legalising the drug would be "a panacea" that could solve many social problems. 뉴욕타임즈에 의하면, 마리화나의 합법화가 많은 사회문제를 해결하는 만병통치약이라 여기는 건 그릇된 생각이라 말했다고 한다.

Mr Obama was referring to recent legalisation of marijuana in the states of Colorado and Washington. 오바마는 콜로라도주와 워싱턴주에서 최근 진행되고 있는 마리화나의 합법화 움직임과 관련하여 말했던 것이다.

He has previously admitted using the drug when he was young.

"As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life," Mr Obama said. 그는 자신도 어렸을 때 마리화나를 피운 적이 있다고 실토한 바 있다. “서류에도 잘 나오듯, 나는 어렸을 적에 마리화나를 피웠었죠. 그래서 나는 이걸 성년기 대부분에 피워보았던 담배와 크게 다를 바 없는 안 좋은 습관 혹은 나쁜 행위 정도로 여기지요.

But he added that in terms of its impact on the individual consumer "I don't think it is more dangerous than alcohol". 그러나 그는 개개인 소비자에게 미치는 영향의 견지에서 “난 마리화나를 피우는 게 알코올 보다 더 위험하다고는 보지 않는다.”고 첨언했다.

He also said that poor people - many of them African Americans and Latinos - were disproportionately punished for marijuana use, whereas middle-class users mostly escaped harsh penalties. 그는 중산층 사람들은 대부분 가혹한 처벌에서 벗어나는데 반해, 가난한 사람들 예컨대 많은 아프리카출신 사람들과 라틴계 사람들은 마리화나를 이용했다는 이유 하나로 과도하게 처벌받았다는 점도 또한 지적했다.

"It's important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished." “많은 사람들이 한 두 번 법을 위반했는데 그 가운데 붙잡힌 소수만 처벌을 받는 상황이 우리 사회에서 안 벌어지는 게 중요해요.”

Mr Obama described the legalisation of marijuana in Colorado and Washington as a challenging "experiment". 오바마는 콜로라도와 워싱턴에서 벌어지는 마리화나 합법화를 하나의 도전적인 “실험”으로 여겼던 것이다.

Colorado's law went into effect on 1 January, while Washington is expected to allow the drug's sale later this year. 마리화나에 관해 새로 제정된 콜로라도주의 법은 금년 1웗1일부터 발효되었고 반면에 워싱턴주에서 마리화나의 판매는 금년 후반기부터 허용될 것으로 보인다.
