Almost half of all Indians do not have access to a toilet at home 거의 절반의 인도인들은 집에 화장실이 없다

An Indian charity has unveiled 108 new lavatories in a village which gained notoriety when two young girls were found hanged from a tree there in May. 인도의 한 자선단체가 2명의 소녀가 지난 5월 나무에 목 매달아 자살한 마을에 108개의 값싼 가정용 화장실을 선보였다

The teenage cousins were killed in Katra Sahadatganj in Uttar Pradesh when they went unaccompanied to relieve themselves in the fields. 두 명의 사촌 자매들이 어른 없이 들로 용변을 보러 나갔다가 (강간을 당하고) 우타 프라데시의 카트라 사하닷간지에서 목숨을 끊었다.

Campaigners say the lack of toilets and the need to walk long distances makes women vulnerable to attack. 운동가들은 가정내 화장실의 부재와 먼 거리로 용변을 보러가는 것은 여성들에게 위험한 일이라고 역설한다.

Nearly half of India's 1.2 billion people have no toilets at home. 인도인구 12억 중 거의 절반이 집에 화장실이 없다.

Unveiling the brightly-coloured, cheap lavatories on Sunday, the sanitation charity Sulabh International said it aimed to provide the same facility for every dwelling in India. 지난 일요일 밝은 색깔로 칠해진 저렴한 가정용 화장실들을 선보이면서, 국제위생자선단체 술랍은 인도의 모든 시골마을에 동일한 시설물을 제공하는 걸 목표로 한다고 밝혔다.

"I believe no woman must lose her life just because she has to go out to defecate," Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of the charity, said. 이 단체의 창설자 빈데스와 파탁은 "저는 어떤 여성도 용변을 보러 밖에 나갔다가 목숨을 잃어선 안 된다고 믿어요."라고 말했다.

"Our aim is to provide a toilet to every household in the country in the not-too-distant future," Mr Pathak told the AFP news agency. 파탁은 "우리의 목적은 머지 않아 인도의 모든 가정에 가정용 화장실을 마련해주는 것이예요."라고 AFP통신사에 말했다.

The circumstances of the murder of the two young cousins in Katra Sahadatganj remain unclear. 카트라 사하닷간지에 발생한 두 사촌 자매의 살인은 여전히 원인이 분명히 밝혀진 바 없다.

But they were killed when they - like countless other girls and women - walked to the fields in the dark, for privacy, to relieve themselves. 그러나 이 자매들은 다른 많은 소녀들과 여성들처럼 밤중에 용변을 보러 들에 나갔다가 살해되었다.

In his Independence Day speech on 15 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to end open defecation. 나렌드라 모디 수상은 8월15일 광복절을 맞아 기념사를 하면서 앞으로 야외에서 용변보는 일이 더 이상 없도록 하겠다고 맹세한 바 있다.

"We are in the 21st Century and yet there is still no dignity for women as they have to go out in the open to defecate and they have to wait for darkness to fall," he said. "우리는 21세기를 살고 있는데, 여전히 볼일을 보려면 밤이 되길 기다렸다가 야외로 나가야 하는 여성들에게 존엄은 아직 없습니다."

"Can you imagine the number of problems they have to face because of this?" he asked. "이런 일 때문에 여성들이 만나는 많은 문제들을 여러분을 상상할 수 있겠습니까?" 라고 수상은 물었다.
