論語 學而(학이) 1-2

The Analects Xue'er 1-2

 

有子曰(유자왈), 其爲人也孝弟(기위인야효제), 而好犯上者(이호범상자), 鮮矣(선의). 不好犯上(불호범상), 而好作亂者(이호작란자), 未之有也(미지유야). 君子務本(군자무본), 本立而道生(본립이도생). 孝弟也者(효제야자), 其爲仁之本與(기위인지본여).

 

Master You said: "A man who respects his parents and his elders would hardly be inclined to defy his superiors. A man who is not inclined to defy his superiors will never foment(=stiir up, instigate) a rebellion. A gentleman works at the root. once the root is secured, the Way unfolds. To respect parents and elders is is the root of humanity.

 

유자(=유약)왈, 그 사람됨이 부모에게 효도하고 어른을 공경하는데도 윗사람을 범하기를 좋아하는 경우는 드무니, 윗사람 범하기를 좋아하지 않으면서 난을 일으키기 좋아하는 경우는 드물다. 군자는 근본을 힘쓰는 것이니 근본이 확립이 되면 길이 생기니, 효와 제라는 것은 아마도 인을 행하는 근본인 것이다.
